Recruiting Diary: Our Lady of Mercy ATH Rashard Fant (Vol. II)

RELATED: Check out where some of the state of Georgia’s top college football prospects are going this weekend by clicking here.  Both UGA and Georgia Tech have home games.

Some of Atlanta’s college football prospects will be writing a weekly diary for the AJC until February’s signing day. They will be sharing their thoughts, opinions, adventures and perspectives on the recruiting journey.

Rashard Fant is considered one of the state’s top sleeper prospects. He has been overlooked by many colleges because he attends the small private school of Our Lady of Mercy. However, he has impressed enough as an “athlete” to earn early college football scholarship offers from Florida State, Utah, Ole Miss and Kentucky, among others. Many other colleges will be evaluating him as a senior.

My team, Our Lady of Mercy, started out the 2012 season 2-0, and we have a big game on Friday. We won our season opener against a good Mt. Paran team 38-7. I had a good game, scoring two touchdowns and tallying up 160 all-purpose yards. Also, I recorded four total tackles and a pass break-up. The coaches also told me I tackled really well in the open field, saving two possible touchdowns.

Since my last diary entry, I have received an offer from Indiana University. Receiving an offer from Indiana was great for several reasons: 1) It was my first Big Ten offer which everyone knows the Big Ten is a great conference; 2) Indiana is a great school academically and I have heard nothing but awesome things about this school from the alumni; 3) Lastly, the fact that theyare rebuilding their football program and looking for impact players to come in and help them build a program catches my eye. My high school team began building a strong football program during my sophomore year, therefore, I understand the level of commitment and work a coaching staff needs from the players to make progress from one year to another.

I have not taken any official visit to any schools yet, however, over the next 3 months I plan to be very busy traveling to my top 5 schools. I am currently in the process of deciding which schools I plan to visit. I know for sure I will take an official visit to Utah and Indiana, but I am still trying to work out the dates for both. They are a priority because I have never been to either school and I would like to check out the environment, campus, academics and, of course, the football program.
